On October 20, 1978, Firefighter Robert Sorby of the Chicago Fire Department was fatally injured when he fell out of a moving fire apparatus. Sorby fell while riding in the jump seat on a pumper truck that was responding to a fuel spill on a runway at O’Hare International Airport. Sorby was taken to Resurrection Hospital where he remained unconscious until his death on October 29.
