Officer Robert F. Wenzel was shot and killed during a traffic stop. At some point during the traffic stop, the motorist drew a revolver and fired two shots.

Officer Wenzel, though wounded, was able to return fire, striking the subject multiple times. The dedicated officer died as a result of the injuries he sustained.
