On November 22, 1976, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Walter Watroba of Engine 13 died in the line of duty following a five-alarm fire at the Commonwealth Edison generating plant. Firefighter Watroba was trapped with both of his pinned. After several hours of rescue work, Firefighter Watroba’s left leg was freed, but his right leg had to be amputated for him to be removed. After the procedure, he went into shock and succumbed to his injuries.
He was survived by his wife and three children.
